Lakesmere was responsible for the design, procurement and installation of Corus Kalzip bullnose, verge and Kalplank soffit fabrications for use on the external cladding envelope of the new-build intermediate low-level waste store at the Trawsfynydd decommissioned nuclear power station in Wales. Removal and suitable storage of the waste generated when the station was active has been one of the key stage of its decommissioning programme, and the creation of the intermediate low-level waste store has provide a suitable building in which the processed and packaged waste can be safely stored until a national waste repository becomes available.

The reinforced concrete structure of the store boasts a protective external cladding envelope, complete with a selection of Kalzip fabrications, which is both functional and aesthetically in keeping with the surrounding area. All fabrications, specified in an unusual high-specification paint finish, were supported by a 3mm thick galvanized steel carcassing system fixed back to main steel frame.

The design and procurement of the fabrications was also challenging owing to unusual paint specification, which is subject to a long lead period. The coating specified was Syntha Pulvin Plus, a superdurable polyester powder coating that is ideally suited for use on projects exposed to extreme climatic conditions. The specialist nature of the coatings means that it can only be installed by approved applicators such as Lakesmere.
