Innovation met aviation at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 4 where the new home for the groundbreaking Airbus A380 aircraft was created using an effective off-site solution pioneered by Lakesmere.

The unusual design of the new Airbus A380 features two decks of passenger seating and an extra wide body and so couldn’t be accommodated at any of the existing stands at the airport. Working with main contractor Taylor Woodrow Vinci, Lakesmere helped created two new stands at Heathrow’s Terminal 4 by using an off-site cladding solution featuring Trimo panels and Schüco curtain walling.

Responsible for the design and installation of the cladding on the link walkway of the recently completed up-grade of Stand 406, Lakesmere worked closely with its supply chain partners to complete the successful off-site manufacture of the cladding system. The pre-clad structures were then craned into position from the runway, ensuring a speedy and safe installation process.

Undertaking work at one of the world’s busiest airports presented a number of challenges and on such a high-profile project the need to minimise disruption whilst ensuring the safety of those on site was paramount. The design principle of an off-site cladding system provided the ideal solution and the project was successfully, and safely, completed in time for the Airbus A380’s first scheduled flight.
