The imposing structure of Newcastle Airport’s new air traffic control tower features a unique façade design, with a stylish twisting latticework structure complemented by tiers of tapered Kalzip aluminium sheets to the top and bottom of the vase-shaped building.

Owing to the complexity of the project, the successful delivery of the project relied heavily on Lakesmere’s skills and expertise in both the design and installation of the Kalzip system. Attention to detail and careful planning at the design stage was vital and helped ensure the correct positioning of each individual cranked tapered sheet.

To aid the team during the complex installation process of the pre-fabricated top tier, Lakesmere also designed extra bracing around the parapets to minimise movement on the pre-clad frame during the lifting process. This then enabled the circular viewing tower to be lifted over and around the top of the main shaft, within the specified tolerances, before being fixed into pre-formed pocket connections.

The new air traffic control tower is a key part of Newcastle International Airport’s ongoing expansion programme. Standing at more than twice the height of the Angel of the North and affording 360º view across Newcastle and the surrounding area, the new tower makes an impressive addition to both the city’s skyline and Lakesmere’s vast portfolio.
