The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is the largest single-site development of its kind in the UK and Lakesmere was appointed to design and install the unusual and distinctive shaped Kalzip roofs on three hospital ward towers, Optima rain screen cladding for the hospital plant rooms and chimneys; and a sweeping, feature-walkway to the main hospital entrance

Access to the three sloping elliptical ward towers and the higher, sharply-pitched lift shaft required Lakesmere to devise a safe and efficient installation programme that involved the use of specialist equipment and Working at Height training.

Lakesmere completed the challenging install using a variety of methods and undertook specialist training in the use of abseiling equipment and mast climbers with mechanical platform that scaled the outer cladding. Tower cranes stood in the centre holes of the three main ward towers (inner atriums that went down to the ground floor) and the team used bespoke baskets systems to work on inner and outer edges of roofs.
