Working with main contractor BAM Construction for client Lend Lease, Lakesmere was appointed to complete the challenging building envelope of the new events and exhibition centre which included the creation of a Kalzip roof that features three different profiles, large complex overhanging 3D fascias, flat membrane roofs and perforated screens on the plant areas. Lakesmere also completed the complex installation of rainscreen over both Kalzip and composite panels, with one yellow Sotech rainscreen panel becoming an internal design feature where the external wall of the venue centre opens up into the existing Bluewater shopping centre.

One of the most iconic features of the project is the attractive over-sailing Kalzip roof with feature bullnose that curves and bends inwards to form a roof canopy over the main road access point. The attractive undulating Kalzip roof has also been used as a support for what is expected to be one of the largest bio-diverse green roofs in the UK.

The use of the latest design software was essential in understanding the complex design brief that includes a large feature bullnose with complex geometry and a change in sheet orientation as the Kalzip roof becomes a façade. Lakesmere extensive expertise as the UK’s largest installer of Kalzip was also vital to the successful integration of the three different Kalzip systems that feature on the building’s one roof.

On site, the Lakesmere team was faced with an extremely tight work area with access restrictions on all four sides, with the cinema complex to the rear, car park to the front, main service access road to the left and the Bluewater shopping centre to the right. Careful logistical planning and collaboration with other trades was therefore essential to enable the work to be sequenced and completed safely and effectively.

Offering direct access into the existing Bluewater shopping and leisure centre, which is one of the largest in Europe, the Glow event and exhibition venue has been designed by leading architects Denton Corker Marshall.
