Chill Factore is Manchester's latest tourist attraction featuring a leisure centre, Alpine shopping village and indoor ski slope measuring some 180metres. Lakesmere was appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine to design and install a complex multi-product cladding package that covered approximately 16,000 sqm in total.

The envelope is formed around a cool box comprising two ski slopes and an alpine village centre that is home to over 2000 tonnes of snow. Designed by architects’ FaulknerBrowns, the complex cladding packaging specified three different types of Kalzip aluminium – standard Kalzip, Kalbau profiled sheets and a new perforated façade system. This was complemented by the use of Rodeca coloured cladding and ACM fascias.

The Lakesmere team utilised the latest 3D design technology software to ensure the seamless integration of the various systems and to calculate the different tolerances between the primary steel framework and the cladding package. Experienced in working with all of the different product systems, Lakesmere’s technical expertise helped provide the ideal solution when the original specification of perforated Kalzip was unable to be curved to the tight radius that was required to clad the escape stair tower. Lakesmere therefore suggested the use of standard Kalzip sheets for use at the corners of the tower, as these could be crimp-curved to the desired radius. Kalzip’s perforated façade system, selected as it provided a lightweight and low maintenance solution for a ventilated stair tower, was then used to ‘wrap’ the rest of the structure.
