As one of the UK's largest and most ambitious infrastructure projects, the creation of Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 2 is undoubtedly impressive from ground-level but it is truly breathtaking when seen from above.  Reunited with client BAA, Lakesmere was awarded the £15 million contract to design and install the terminal building’s complex roof structure which has been designed by architects Foster & Partners.

Lakesmere, who was appointed to design and install the terminal’s striking undulating waveform roof, also completed a new gantry system and associated steelwork in addition to work on the terminal’s plant rooms. Overall, Lakesmere’s extensive contract saw the specialist install some 45,000m² of Kalzip aluminium and approximately 6,000 m² of glazing.

Working alongside its key supply chain partners and utilising the latest 3D design technology and logistical planning tools, Lakesmere’s in-house design team developed a sophisticated technical solution for the unique 50 000m² ‘eyebrow-shaped’ roof. The result meets the stringent acoustic, thermal and energy performance requirements demanded for the 180,000sqm building sited alongside a major international runway.
