The University of East London’s Docklands Campus, which runs alongside the Royal Albert Dock, features pairs of round accommodation buildings and teaching blocks which have a series of sweeping roofs extending to sharply pointed corners that cantilever over the main piazza.

Durability and innate resistance to corrosion made aluminium the obvious choice as a roofing material in this semi-marine environment and Kalzip was specified to meet the challenging geometric shapes of the butterfly wing circular roofs. Working to the objectives outlined in the Egan Report, meeting the key objectives of zero defects, predictability of time frame and budget restraints, involved extensive co-operation between all parties from the earliest stage. Lakesmere's design team worked closely with the both the architect and main contractor, paying particular attention to the bespoke design details and the interface with other materials.
