The creation of the new building for Edinburgh’s Napier University’s Faculty of Health, Life and Social Sciences saw Lakesmere appointed to install a complex roofing and cladding package on the refurbished central spine block of the existing building and four additional new facilities.

As the largest building project in the University’s history, expectations were not only extremely high but it was also vital that the new building met the necessary performance criteria whilst remaining in budget. Following almost a two-year tender process during which Lakesmere attended numerous client meetings, the team was able to devise a product specification that offered the best value. Lakesmere’s product specification has also contributed to the building’s overall sustainable design that aimed to minimise heat loss through the walls and roof, maximise the use of natural daylight and ventilation and utilise solar shading to prevent overheating.

Designed by Edinburgh architects RMJM, the attractive design of the cladding package features cladding in three complementary shades of silver grey, which required meticulous planning and careful attention to detail at both the design and installation stages. As a special design feature, the Learning Resource Centre building boasts an attractive sunken curtain wall elevation surrounded by an aluminium picture frame.
