The Lakesmere Group is delighted to have been involved in the creation of the Plimsoll Building, a new 13-storey residential development offering high-specification apartments in the heart of London’s Kings Cross.

Showcasing the full expertise of the Group, the contract saw Lakesmere deliver a complex curtain walling, glazing and roof light package with McMullen Facades undertaking the manufacture of the unitised panels.

Lakesmere’s full scope of works included the design and installation of Schueco thermally-insulated curtain wall system, windows and sliding doors to upper levels. The team also supplied the brise soleil and the circular and rectangular roof lights. Additional features which reflect the development’s high specification design scheme included the incorporation of electronic actuators to create automatic opening windows.

The successful delivery of the contract was dependent on Lakesmere’s logical site planning expertise to ensure the seamless co-ordination with the preceding and follow-on trades. It was also vital that work on the building’s envelope was completed quickly and efficiently so that the project met the deadline for being weathertight.

Owing to the site’s tight footprint and to enable other trades greater access the building’s exterior, Lakesmere faced the challenge of installing the glazing and curtain walling elements from the internal floor slabs. With space and access limited, this was considered and factored in at the earliest design stage to ensure that all work could be completed successfully without the need for external scaffold or lifting gear.

Working alongside main contractor Carillion for client Argent, the new Plimsoll Building is a key focus of the wider regeneration of the King’s Cross area and forms a striking cluster of towers surrounded by an attractive communal garden. Boasting spectacular views across the city, the new scheme comprises a mixture of residential apartments and amenities including a fitness studio as well as the incorporation of the Academy primary and nursery school and the Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children.
