A dramatic, sweeping Kalzip aluminium roof installed by Lakesmere has helped shape the new Leigh Technology Academy College into one of the country’s most striking educational buildings.

Designed by the Building Design Partnership, the Leigh Technology Academy in Dartford, Kent features four new college buildings and a sports hall located under a large sweeping Kalzip roof, which arcs down to ground level from a height of 12m.The creation of the complex roof design was reliant on the close collaboration and the development of a positive partnering philosophy between Lakesmere and main contractor Galliford Try at the initial design stage.

The project also saw the debut use of Lakesmere’s 3D modelling software that has been designed to help identify the necessary plant requirements and possible site restrictions before going on-site. The use of this technology enabled solutions to key issues such as design, logistics, acoustics, fire stopping and making the structure watertight as soon as possible, to be successfully realised prior to the commencement of work. Lakesmere also made models of plant equipment, such as cranes, cherry pickers and scissors lifts, to choose the most effective type of equipment without having to make excessive visits to site. For this project, Lakesmere also modelled one of its site rolling machines, which were used to make the extra-long sections of Kalzip, so that the team could gauge the logistics of using it on site.
