Four of the UK’s busiest airports, Glasgow, Heathrow, Gatwick and Edinburgh now have something else in common – new and improved car parking facilities. The airports, which are operated by the British Airport Authority (BAA), have each benefited from a major redevelopment and expansion programme and Lakesmere’s involvement was vital to the successful design and construction of the schemes. With numerous logistical challenges to overcome, communication and teamwork were vital the successful creation of the new car parks.

Operator BAA wanted to create a uniform appearance across four of its flagship airports and the distinctive yet functional aluminium cladding installed by Lakesmere at Glasgow Airport has now become a standard feature of all new build and renovated BAA car parks and has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of a busy international airport.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges faced by the Lakesmere team was at Gatwick where one of the three individual car parks needed to remainoperational throughout. Therefore, the health and safety of the public and ensuring the minimum of disruption and inconvenience were prime concerns. Specific training was undertaken so that where possible, work could be carried out at night. Specialist training was also completed with the Airport Construction Training Alliance (ACTA), which was introduced by BAA explicitly to address the needs of the supply chain whilst working within close proximity to operational airports.
