Created by Reid Architecture, the designs of the family of new buildings at Farnborough Airport are anything but ‘plane’. Helping to deliver the architect’s vision of a unified aviation campus, Lakesmere has enjoyed repeat business at the Hampshire airport having been appointed to work on four of the new buildings.

The airport, which is a commercially qualified airport for the exclusive use of business jet aircraft is also the home of the Farnborough Air show, one of the largest aerospace trade shows in the world. Lakesmere was contracted by Bovis Lend Lease to design and install the roof and wall packages on the new air traffic control tower, hangar and the terminal building.

These three functionally diverse buildings have been designed to complement each other but are equally as impressive in their own right. The elegant ATC tower, wrapped in a brushed aluminium skin, was the first structure to be completed by the Lakesmere team with the unusual arched hanger building with its widespan roof following soon after. The airport’s terminal building also boasts an innovative design, featuring a dramatic asymmetrical ‘wing-like’ roof that has been created using tapered Kalzip aluminium sheets.

Following the successful delivery of these three buildings, Lakesmere has been awarded a further contract at Farnborough Airport and the team is currently on site installing a Kalzip roofing and sinusoidal profiled wall cladding package to a new hanger building.
