It was a winning combination of innovative supply chain collaboration that embraced the benefits of off-site construction that helped Lakesmere deliver the new platform roofing canopies at Reading Station. Resulting in significant reduction in disruption to rail users and maximum benefits to the client, including improved health and safety, faster installation and improved quality through factory based pre-installation quality audits, Lakesmere’s successful partnership with Bourne Steel also led to Lakesmere becoming the first tier 2 contractor to gain accreditation to the BS11000 standard for collaborative working practices.

Working as part of a project team headed up by a Costain/Hochtief Joint Venture, Lakesmere collaborated with partner Bourne Steel to devise an innovative bespoke off-site solution for the creation of the platform canopies in addition to completing traditional roofing packages to the entrance buildings and facade cladding works to the platform buildings.

Despite providing a first-class solution, off-site wasn’t the first choice and initially two separate packages were specified for the structural steelwork and the roof canopies and soffits. However having partnered with Bourne on a previous rail project, Lakesmere believed that by collaborating at the earliest design stage, the structural steel and roofing packages could be integrated into a single package of works.

Following detailed design development involving each team sharing and reviewing information in order to understand the detail and constraints for each individual package, processes were optimised to provide an integrated, single source solution.

Rather than operate two individual packages which would have inevitably resulted in significant disruption to rail passengers, potential health and safety and logistical issues, the collaboration between the two businesses resulted in a solution for the Reading Station canopies that could be manufactured entirely off site, providing a high speed solution for the rail industry.
